PS3 storefront is getting an overhaul

While the PS3 XMB is pretty much universally loved the same cannot be said about the PlayStation Store. Sony decided to do something about this and are rolling out a redesign of the storefront on October 23rd.

Eric Lempel had this to say about the update:

“We’ve listened closely to your feedback and used it to build a brand new PlayStation Store. With a stunning new user interface, simple search and powerful content discovery, it’s an in-store experience that’s more streamlined and accessible than ever before.”

According to Morgan Haro on the PS Blog, the Store is built with HTML 5 and more features will be added in the future, potentially also changes to the “Download list”.

We do wonder if the HTML5-based store will finally let us queue up and download content from a browser in the near future?

You also have to think Sony has the PS4 in mind when doing a redesign this late in the console cycle. Is this style telling us something about the form factor for PS4, i think it does.

What do you think about the new design?

I think it looks really sleek. Hopefully the new HTML5 guts does translate into a universal browser store. Can’t wait to use it!

So dark though. Wonder if it’s a theme or if it’ll always be black and gloomy. For the design itself I guess it’s okey? I wanna see how it runs and how easy it is to use before I make up my mind.

I was just thinking the same.. Kinda dark for what it used to be.. maybe just so its easier to use game images and so on like that and stands out.. I’m very curious to see it and use it..

It does look a bit dark. It will probably change based on the featured games though. In terms of usability your guess is as good as mine, it’ll probably be slightly better than the old one not much more

Agree with what you guys have all ready said, I’m sure if they put a really bright background image there it will look completely different, so i kinda like the idea that they can change it around like that based on promos and games. But the usability is what really counts when it comes down to it… I’ll be happy if its just slightly faster than today and easier to browse lots of content.
