Viaplay streaming service announced for PS3

There is a lot to be said about Sony’s efforts in regards to movie streaming services in Europe, and specifically the Nordic countries. That is about change.

In a press release today Sony announced the launch of Viaplay for PlayStation 3. Viaplay is a service offering movies, shows and live sports. The service is already available on PC, Mac, smart phones, tablets, Smart TV’s from LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Philips and they also have their own Viaplay Box. So far Scandinavians have been treated, and limited to, the great Vidzone service while consumers in America have been able to stream and download media for ages. It took years before the service would reach the UK but is still leaving the rest of us in dark.

CEO of Viaplay Niclas Ekdahl had this to say about the announcement:

“We are very proud of the cooperation with Sony. As the Nordic Countries’ leading online service, we feel it’s both natural and exciting to be able to offer Viaplay’s content on a leading console, and to continue expanding the availability of the service”

When the service is released you will find it under “TV/Video services” and “My Channels” on your XMB. It will require both a PlayStation Plus subscription and a Viaplay subscription for unlimited use, but as a Plus-only user you can still use the service to rent shows and movies.

Will be interesting to see what kinds of pay-per-view sport stuff this will have.

Why would they put it behind the PS+ wall? Kind of weird…

I guess it’s to increase the value of Plus as a service, but you’d think that the instant game collection alone would take care of that.

I get that, but I don’t need my Plus subscription to watch Netflix or anything else. I just don’t like that, kind of a Microsoft move. :p

That is sorta strange I have to agree. But than again, you’re lucky you have Netflix :D
