Sony Online Entertainment goes independent – games go multi-platform

It was announced today that Sony Online Entertainment has been acquired by Columbus Nova which is an investment management firm with roots in technology and media. They wouldn’t mind if you now refer to them as Daybreak Game Company LLC. This also means that their upcoming portfolio of games like Planetside 2 and H1Z1 will be developed for other consoles as well. We’re not entirely sure what this means for existing properties like DC Universe Online, but the following quote reassures us that it’s business as usual, quite literally:

So what exactly does this mean for you? It will be business as usual and all SOE games will continue on their current path of development and operation. In fact, we expect to have even more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition. It also means new exciting developments for our existing IP and games as we can now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in. The Team at Daybreak

Interesting move, I wonder how much it went for.

As long as game quality doesn’t get affected but improved, it should be interesting enough to see what the new players have to bring.
