After taking part in the unbelievable journey in The Last of Us it’s hard to imagine a better game coming out this generation, but Beyond: Two Souls have a shot at it. Beyond is an interactive drama action-adventure video game for the PlayStation 3, made by French developer Quantic Dream, famous for making Heavy Rain. The game stars actors Ellen Page (Inception, Juno, Hard Candy), Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, Finding Nemo, The Boondock Saints, The English Patient) and Kadeem Hardison (White Men Can’t Jump, A Different World) and is set for release on October 8th in North America and on the 11th in Europe.

The making of
Quantic Dream CEO David Cage announced the game at Sony’s press conference during E3 2012 and the debut trailer featuring in-game graphics was released during the press conference. Actress Ellen Page revealed in an interview that the script for the game was 2000 pages long. Tragically the original soundtrack for the game was composed by Normand Corbeil, who died of pancreatic cancer on 25 January 2013. Lorne Balfe, famous for making the soundtrack for Assassin’s Creed III, replaced Corbeil. A 35 minute trailer was screened at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival which made the game the second in history to have been recognized by the film festival because of it’s cinematic qualities. The latest trailer revealed at E3 2013 shows how players can control Jodie Holmes and the entity, Aiden, in their journey.

The plot
The game, which features psychological, spiritual and thriller elements, is centered around questions about what happens after death. The game lets the player take Jodie Holmes through 15 years of her life (ages 8 through 23) on a journey to discover the true meaning of the entity Aiden, who has been alongside her throughout her life.

The creator

David Cage is founder, co-CEO (with Guillaume de Fondaumière), director, lead game designer, and screenwriter at studio Quantic Dream. He founded Quantic Dream back in 1997 and has directed all three games released by the studio: Omikron: The Nomad Soul (1999), Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy (2005), and Heavy Rain (2010). Quantic Dream always tries to make different games and places emphasis on storytelling, emotion and innovation
Heavy Rain won three awards at the BAFTA Interactive Entertainment Awards where he made this statement:
“Games always explore the same things. They’re about being powerful, being the good guys against the bad guys – that’s a very tiny part of what can be done. There are so many other stories to tell, so many other emotions to trigger – this is a fantastic new medium, we can do much more than we currently do with it.”
Exclusive content
GameStop will release exclusive downloadable content (DLC) of an additional 30-minute scene for those who pre-order the game. Also available is a “special edition” which comes in steelbook packaging and includes various bonus features.
Special Edition includes:
• Exclusive Steelbook Premium Packaging

Across the continents of Auraxis, thousands of players will come together in enormous battles to win control of territory and resources for their empire in PlanetSide 2. This sequel takes all the groundbreaking features from the original massive multiplayer battles, distinctive empires to rally around, and enormous continents to support intense ground and air combat and adds features that modern gamers have come to expect out of the FPS and MMO genres. With an extensive skill tree and a free-form class-based system, players will be able to customize their soldier, weapons and vehicles to match their play-style, or the needs of their squad, outfit or empire. Battles can last for days or weeks, so players will need to build real alliances and combat outfits to take on long-term strategic and tactical initiatives. With air, ground and seaborne combat, the battles are more intense than ever.
Various character, vehicle and artillery customization features will be available to players constructing the perfect fighter for their favorite of the three empires: The Terran Republic (the conservative, authoritative nation aiming to reunite the clashing factions), The New Conglomerate (a liberated faction fighting to remaining free) or The Vanu Sovereignty (technophiles seeking to develop and exploit alien technology). Also, an in-depth and adaptive class system with ranks, unlockable traits and skill sets will give players complete control over their online warrior.

Naughty Dog just released patch 1.02 for The Last of Us. Important issues like how a disconnect counted towards your clan day (which meant you lost resources and survivors), and better host migration are among the things fixed. Full list below.
Single player
– Texture of a phone number on a bulletin board changed
Multiplayer
– Host migration has been improved. Losing connection to the host during a migration should occur less often
– General crash when leaving multiplayer fixed
– Intro camera fix for some introductory cut-scenes
– Connectivity issues while playing have been tuned
– If you disconnect or lose connection to the host, you will no longer advance a clan day. You will only advance a day if you are kicked from the match, or exit through the menu
– Explosion Expert level 2 should be selectable now
– The voting time for match selection has been reduced to 15 seconds
– “No party” playlist options have been added to both Supply Raid and Survivors, players can only join this playlist solo
– Melee against a downed character now uses the same range as normal melee
As with any game featuring multiplayer, more tweaks and fixes can be expected in the future.

Rurico Martinez asks: What is the biggest change in this Killzone game that it makes it feel different from the other ones?
Obviously, we are keeping what is great about Killzone – we have a unique universe, iconic enemies and some great features like the hit-responses, first person cover and the melee system. But we’re also building on that, expanding and polishing those systems with things like drop-down melees and combo melee attacks. More importantly though, we’re adding many more player abilities and providing larger, more open arenas for you to play in and find your own unique solutions to problems.
The OWL attack drone is a prime example of this: its combat abilities allow you to fight on your terms and decide how the battle plays out. We want to encourage that kind of thoughtful and dynamic play-style, to create moments you will want to share. It is not just about outgunning your enemy – it’s about outmaneuvering and outsmarting them as well. Killzone: Shadow Fall is a shooter that requires both skills and brains.
Dominik Asch asks: How much do we learn of Helghast society?
For this game we’ve created a highly detailed world that is both futuristic and believable. The new, more thoughtful gameplay style will afford you more opportunities to take in the rich history and backstory of its people.
The game starts out on the now divided world of Vekta, with only a wall separating the Helghast and the Vektans. The deep-rooted hate and distrust between the two factions has built up and the world is on the brink of war. Your missions will take you across the wall, where you will get a first-hand look at how Helghast society lives and works. Again, we’ve put a lot of effort into creating this world – we’ve looked at the people, the infrastructure, the brands, the culture and news reporting that form part of a living and breathing futuristic world.
@PsVitaLifeStyle asks: Will the guns and characters have the same weight and feel like Killzone 3?
The feel of the weapons is hugely important to us. We have always gone for a way to connect the player to the game-world. This should never feel cumbersome or frustrating, but be responsive and allow for fluid gameplay that has a believable weight to it. This weight is created through realistic animations and should not be a result of input lag, which is something which gets often confused.
@StevenNoble asks: Can you customize control layout? I struggled when moving between Killzone, Battlefield and Call of Duty.
We are ensuring that the default setting feels intuitive and covers the important gameplay mechanics that we have in Killzone: Shadow Fall. It always takes experimentation and lots of testing to get this right, and we realize that even then it’s probably not the best layout for everyone. So we will provide options to change the layout. The new controller feels different in a couple of important areas, and we are taking advantage of the new features and feel. But if, for example, you don’t like to fire using the new outward curved triggers, you can change that.
@BossDooley asks: You always pushed the PlayStation 3 with AI and Graphics, how has the PlayStation 4 opened up building on these mechanics?
As a developer it is great to get new tools to play with, because overall it allows us to create richer experiences. Obviously there are always choices to make on issues like design and production values, but the boundaries of what we’re able to do have been extended. The PlayStation 4 allows us to add more things and take them a step further. We can, for example, invest in more realistic animations, larger scale, better visual FX and more characters, and reach a higher quality on all of them.
At the same time, we’re pleased that the PlayStation 4 isn’t just about more power – it’s also about new control methods and features and services that encourage a different kind of interaction with the game and the people around you. In that regard we’re also very excited about Killzone: Shadow Fall’s multiplayer mode, but more on that later…

Back in February, 2013, at the global Sony PlayStation 4 unveiling event in New York City Mark Cerny was revealed as the console’s lead architect. He also showed in-game footage of his own new game which he is developing for the console called Knack. At Gamelab 2013 he talked about the road to the PS4.
This might not come as a big surprise but “sources close to the inner circle” at Sony have leaked that the PS4 will get an official release date during GamesCom in August. The German site PC Games cannot confirm the information and so far Sony only confirmed a holiday 2013 launch window which probably means October or November.
