Netflix out in Sweden, rest of Scandinavia soon

Netflix launched its online video streaming service for Sweden today. To celebrate this they offer a free 30-day trial and after that it will costs 79SEK ($12) per month.

As an additional offer you can get the free trial until 2013 if you all ready have a Spotify Premium account.

Netflix will be launching its online service in Norway, Denmark and Finland, before the end of this year.

The PS3 application works like a charm and is easy and intuitive to navigate. Sadly the range of TV shows and movies is very limited and outdated compared to the US counterpart.

Outdated, huh? That’s exactly what a service like this should avoid to even stand a chance. But then again, I imagine most Netflix users on PS3 already have a sub so this will just be added value. The threshold for a guy like me though, who doesn’t have Netflix and would probably enjoy using my PS3 as the client, becomes a bit higher knowing this.

Actually, Netflix Sweden Is quite good. Sweden is the first country to get new Warner Brothers movies from Netflix. They also get many older movies that aren’t being shown in the USA (Pulp Fiction, Seven, Bettlejuice, The Godfather, etc.) Plus, the Starz tv show Spartacus.

And of course, it just debuted. It takes time to build up the catalog.

I actually watched all of those movies before they took them down here in the US. Contractual disputes are great! :(

I’m not saying there aren’t a lot of great movies here, I’m just saying compared to Netflix in the US it’s not even close. And what about TV shows? We get a few like Dexter (last 3 seasons are missing), Breaking Bad (latest season is missing), The Walking Dead (only season 1) but just the first few seasons of the shows. There is a huge gap here that makes all the difference. I think for services like this you have to keep up with the US release dates or else the mass market will find their media from different outlets. I’m not saying this is Netflix’s fault, I’m sure there is a million hoops to jump through in order to get this fixed, but until it does, there is just no point.
